Thirteen Shootings in Thirteen Days

In the first thirteen days of March, there have been thirteen shootings involving children with access to firearms. Four of them occurred on the same day.

Already in March:

7 children were injured
4 children were killed
2 adults were injured
6 children shot a sibling
3 children shot a family member other than a sibling
2 children shot themselves
1 child shot a friend
1 child shot a bystander/neighbor

Incidents so far this month:

March 12 – Lake Providence, Louisiana
Child killed by sibling
Two brothers, a 12-year-old and a 7-year-old were inside a bedroom at their residence. The 12-year-old was handling a firearm when it discharged, striking and killing the younger child. The 12-year-old was the oldest of six children who were all home without adult supervision. The investigation is ongoing. No word on whether or not charges will be filed.

March 12 – Beaumont, Texas
Child injured by family member
A 14-year-old was accidentally shot Monday afternoon by an 8-year-old family member playing with a firearm. Preliminary reports indicate that the gun discharged while the 8-year-old was handling it. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed.

March 12 – Edwards, Mississippi
Adult injured by child
A 10-year-old and 15-year-old were target practicing when a bullet struck a neighbor in the neck.  The children were visiting from Texas. The victim was taken to the hospital. No word on why they were firing a gun without adult supervision or whether any charges will be filed.

March 12 – Mobile, Alabama
Child killed by sibling
A 2-year-old gained access to a loaded gun and fired it, killing his 1-year-old brother.  The two children had been left alone in their parents’ bedroom where they found the gun.  No word on whether or not charges will be filed.

March 10 – Chicago, Illinois
Child injured by cousin
A 3-year-old boy unintentionally shot his 9-year-old cousin.  The boy found a gun inside a home and shot the older girl in the right arm.  Her injuries were not life threatening.  No word on whether or not charges will be filed.

March 10 – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Child killed by sibling
A 9-year-old girl was unintentionally shot and killed by her brother at their home.  The brother was taken to the Milwaukee County Children’s Court Center and the parents were both arrested.

March 9 – Lexington, Kentucky
Child injured self
A 16-year-old boy brought a gun to school and was showing it off when it discharged, striking the boy in the hand. He was charged of possession of a weapon on school property and wanton endangerment.

March 8 – Lawrence, Kansas
Child injured by sibling
A 16-year-old unintentionally shot his 11-year-old brother in the ankle with .22 caliber rifle outside their house.  The injury was not life threatening.  No charges have been filed.

March 7 – Prescott Valley, Arizona
Father injured by child
A 7-year-old child with autism unintentionally shot his father through the back as he was sleeping. The child knew the gun was kept in a small locked safe in a closet and knew where the keys to the safe were kept. The child reportedly used a chair from the dining room to access the safe in the closet, took the gun, and shot his father. Police say he could not provide a reason for shooting his dad. At the time of the shooting, the mother was sleeping in the living room with their 2-year-old and 7-year-old sons. Another 13-year-old son was in his room doing homework.

March 4 – La Grange, Georgia
Child injured by sibling
A 4-year-old girl was unintentionally shot by a sibling.  At the time of the shooting, the 4-year-old was at home with her mother and 2-year-old and 7-year-old sibling.  It was not reported which of the siblings shot the girl.  The gun belonged to the mother’s boyfriend.  He has been charged with cruelty to child second degree and reckless conduct.

March 4 – Atlanta, Georgia
Child killed by friend
A 17-year-old playing with a pistol in a room of friends unintentionally shot and killed his 15-year-old friend. The 17-year-old turned himself in to police and was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

March 3 – Hayesville, Ohio
Child injured by sibling
An 8-year-old shot his 4-year-old sister at their home. Reports say there were multiple shots.  Both children were removed from the home. The mother was arrested.

March 2 – Rockford, Illinois
Child injured self
A 14-year-old was arrested after unintentionally shooting himself in the leg while riding in a car. He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18 and no firearm owner’s identification.–475787993.html
