In the month of June, 29 kids unintentionally shot themselves or someone else

In the 30 days of June 2018, there were 29 shootings involving children with access to negligently stored firearms, resulting in the deaths of 10 children.  Nineteen children and one adult were injured when a child unintentionally shot them with a gun left accessible.

  • Thirteen of the shooters were under the age of 13.  Five were toddlers.
  • Thirteen children shot themselves. Ten shot a friend. Five shot a sibling or other family member. One shot a neighbor.
  • Nineteen incidents occurred in the victim’s home. Four occurred at a friend’s home. Three occurred in a vehicle. Three occurred in outdoors, in a public place, or an undisclosed location.
  • Louisiana and Tennessee saw the most incidents, six in Louisiana and three in Tennessee.
  • There were multiple shootings some days in June.  One June 1st alone, there were five separate incidents. Of those five shootings, three were in Louisiana.
  • Based on the reporting at the time of the incidents, charges were brought or pending in only 11 of the 29 shooting incidents.  In five of the 11 cases where charges were filed or pending, the child shooter was the individual charged, Of the children charged, all were between the ages of 13 and 14.

6/26/18  Las Vegas, Nevada

A teen was playing with a gun when it unintentionally fired, shooting himself in the arm and chest.

6/26/18  Monett, Missouri    
Shooters age group: Toddler (1-3)
A 3-year-old shot himself in the head with a gun he found in his parent’s car. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators believe the child woke up early, went to the garage and was playing in the family car where he found a loaded semi-automatic pistol. As he was playing with the gun, it discharged. No charges have been filed.

6/24/18  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Shooters age group: Unknown teen
Three teens were playing video games at a home in when one of them got possession of a gun. The gun was accidentally discharged by a 16-year-old, hitting one of the other teens, a 17-year-old. His condition is unknown.  No details on who the gun belonged to are why minors were able to access it have been provided.  The 16-year-old shooter was arrested. It is unknown whether or not he will be charged.

6/23/18  Oakdale, Louisiana
Shooters age group: Pre-schooler (4-6)
A 4-year-old boy gained access to his father’s .40 caliber handgun and shot himself in the head with it. He did not survive. The father told police that he normally stored his gun on top of a refrigerator, but had left it in a bathroom adjacent to the parents’ bedroom.  No charges have been filed.

6/23/18  Shreveport, Louisiana
Shooters age group: Toddler (1-3)
A 3-year-old boy unintentionally shot himself in the arm. The boy picked up the loaded gun after his mother said she briefly set the weapon down. Investigators believe the mother was sleeping outside of the home on the front porch and left the gun unsecured inside of the home with three small children inside. She was charged with one count of illegal use of a weapon.

6/23/18  Port Barre, Louisiana          
Shooters age group: Toddler (1-3)
A 2-year-old little boy shot himself in the leg with his father’s gun. The child’s father said he had his gun in his truck console for protection and didn’t think the boy could reach it. He left the child in the truck while he stepped out to smoke a cigarette, then heard a gunshot. The child was treated an released from the hospital.  The father has not been charged.  An investigation is ongoing.

6/17/18  Knox County, Tennessee
Shooters age group: Young teen (13-15)
A 13-year-old and 16-year-old were target shooting with a a .22-rifle in a backyard without using the right backstop, when a bullet fired by the younger child went through trees, hitting a 63-year-old neighbor in the stomach.  The 13-year-old was taken into custody. No word on why the teens were target shooting without adult supervision or who the rifle belonged to.

6/12/18  St. Joseph, Missouri
Shooters age group: Toddler (1-3)
A 2-year-old gained access to her uncle’s loaded gun and shot herself in the chest with it.  She did not survive. The uncle, who was sleeping, was charged with two felony counts of first degree endangering the welfare of a child.

6/12/18  Memphis, Tennessee
Shooters age group: Young teen (13-15)
A 12-year-old girl has died after she was unintentionally shot by a 13-year-old relative with an unsecured gun inside her parent’s SUV. Charges of aggravated child abuse and criminally negligent homicide have been filed against the girl’s mother and the 13-year-old relative has been charged with reckless homicide.

6/12/18 Henrico, Virginia
Shooters age group: Older teen (16-17)
A teen playing with a gun in a vacant apartment unintentionally shot himself, causing a nearby school to go on lockdown.

6/12/18  Chicago, Illinois                  
Shooters age group: Young teen (13-15)
A 14 year old unintentionally shot himself in the leg.

6/10/18 Homewood, Alabama
Shooters age group: Unknown teen
A 15-year-old was seriously injured in what police believe was an unintentional shooting. Another teen has been detained. Details on who the gun belonged to and the circumstances around the shooting are unknown.

6/9/18 Harrogate, Tennessee          
Shooters age group: Toddler (1-3)
A 2-year-old pulled a gun off the top of a dresser, and shot himself in the head with it.  No charges were filed.

6/7/18 Greenville, Mississippi
Shooters age group: Elementary-age (7-9)
Two siblings were playing with a pellet gun with the parents home when the 8 year old fired it, killing his 9 year old brother.

6/7/18 Silver Lake, Oregon
Shooters age group: Young teen (13-15)
A 13-year-old boy is dead after being unintentionally shot in the chest by his best friend, another 13-year-old boy.

6/6/18 Riverdale, Georgia
Shooters age group: Unknown teen
A 12-year-old girl was unintentionally shot and killed by a friend.  The girl was home alone when a couple of boys came over. One had a gun and was playing with it when it discharged. The two boys — ages 13 and 14 — have been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and being a minor in possession of a firearm.

6/6/18 Pratt County, Kansas
Shooters age group: Unknown minor
A 5-year-old little girl was shot by a sibling. She was transported to the hospital by helicopter. No other information was provided.

6/5/18 Borger, Texas
Shooters age group: Unknown teen
A 16-year-old was killed and a 17-year-old injured in an unintentional shooting. Police report that a group of individuals had been in a parking lot when a 40 caliber pistol was produced. The gun was not stolen. A single gunshot was accidentally discharged, killing the 16-year-old and injuring the 17-year-old.

6/5/18 Everitt, Washington  
Shooters age group: Tween (10-12)
A 12-year-old was injured in what police describe as an accidental shooting.  The boy was taken to the hospital and was expected to survive.  It is unclear whether or not the child’s parents were home at the time.

6/5/18 Elizabethton, Kentucky
Shooters age group: Pre-schooler (4-6)
A 6-year-old child found a gun, which belonged to a friend of his mother, unattended on a table in his home and fatally shot himself with it. The gun owner has been arrested and charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

6/5/18 Glendale, Arizona     
Shooters age group: Tween (10-12)
Two 13-year-old boys were “messing around” with a handgun after midnight on when the weapon was discharged. The victim was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition. Police say the gun belonged to the mother of the victim, who was in another room at the time of the shooting. Investigators learned that the firearms inside the home were not properly secured and were accessible. Charges are expected to be submitted against the child who was handling the gun when it fired, as well as against the mother for endangerment.

6/4/18 Flint, Michigan          
Shooters age group: Pre-schooler (4-6)
A 4-year-old girl picked up what she thought to be a toy gun and shot one round that hit her left index finger.  The finger later had to be amputated. It’s alleged the parents routinely kept multiple handguns in the closet, some of which were kept loaded. Children’s toys were also allegedly kept in the same closet. No gun safe was found in the home. The parents face charges of second-degree child abuse, obstruction of justice, and lying to a peace officer in a violent crime.

6/4/18 Harrison Township, Ohio
Shooters age group: Young teen (13-15)
A 13-year-old boy unintentionally shot and killed his 2-year-old brother while playing with a gun and was charged with reckless homicide. The victim’s father was charged in federal court with being a felon in possession of a gun.

6/4/18 Chicago, Illinois
Shooters age group: Elementary-age (7-9)
A 5-year-old boy was unintentionally shot and critically injured by his 8-year-old brother.  The gun belonged to the boys’ uncle, a licensed gun owner.  Deputies also found an AK-47, a shotgun and parts for an AR-15-style rifle under a mattress. The gun owner has been charged with misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and allowing a minor to access a firearm

6/1/18 Brunswick, Georgia
Shooters age group: Unknown minor
A girl was playing with her father’s handgun when she accidentally shot another girl in the chin. She had been joking with friends that her father would shoot any boy who bothered her.  She then retrieved her father’s Taurus 9 mm handgun from the bed stand drawer. She removed the ammunition magazine, but apparently racked a bullet into the gun’s chamber in the process. She was holding the gun when it discharged as she turned around in response to her name being called by one of the other girls. The father later told police his daughter knew where he kept the handgun. No charges have been filed.

6/1/18 Plaquemine, Louisiana         
Shooters age group: Unknown teen
The chief says a group of at least eight juveniles was at a home near the park, and somehow a shot was accidentally fired by one of the juveniles, who was reportedly unfamiliar with the weapon. The shot struck the male victim, who is 14 or 15-years-old, in the thigh.  

6/1/18 Yakima, Washington
Shooters age group: Young teen (13-15)
A 14-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his wrist and chest when he was accidentally shot by a friend. Upon questioning, the shooting victim admitted to officers that his 14-year-old friend had accidentally shot him while they were at the friend’s home. The sheriff’s office says the friend confirmed the story when he was confronted. Criminal charges may be filed after the investigation is completed.

6/1/18 Opelousas, Louisiana
Shooters age group: Pre-schooler (4-6)
A 6-year-old unintentionally shot themselves. Investigators determined that there was no foul play on the part of the adults responsible for the child; however, details on what happened are unclear at this time.

6/1/18 New Orleans, Louisiana
Shooters age group: Unknown child
A 7-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the neck by another child. a juvenile whose gender nor age was released was playing with the gun when it discharged, striking the 7-year-old girl. No additional information was provided.
