2016-2017 Child Shooting Data

CFSA has developed a unique national database below of shooting incidents where children under the age of 18 years old have unintentionally pulled the trigger and shot themselves or someone else.

In 2016:

  • 63  toddlers picked up a gun  and pulled the trigger
  • The youngest victim was 13 months old
  • 111 kids under the age of seven unintentionally shot themselves or someone else
  • There were 318 incidents where a child under the age of 18 gained access to a loaded firearm

Compiled with the aid of Gun Violence Archive, The Trace, media/police reports and old-fashioned Google searches, the CFSA database is updated daily – allows for filtering of numerous criteria including:

  1. date of incident
  2. city or county and state
  3. age group of children shooter
  4. incident result
  5. circumstance of shooting
  6. relationship of shooter to victim
  7. age of shooter and age of victim
  8. incident brief details
  9. incident location
  10. firearm type used
  11. if charges are filed (if known)
  12. address of incident
